Question from a WordTruth.Com friend:
>>I am struggling with the feeling of loneliness and wanting someone to hold me since school started. I do know how to deal with it. When I want someone to hold me, I try to think of Jesus. However, I get confused after a while since the feeling of loneliness keeps on coming back to me. I've prayed about it...it seems that I am not getting anywhere and it makes me depressed more.

WordTruth.Com Response:
How do you overcome feelings of loneliness? First of all, God recognized the need for relationships in our lives. God Himself is a relational being by nature -- the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit each have perfect fellowship with one another within the Holy Trinity. It is difficult in our minds to grasp the three-in-one nature of God. Yet the Scripture consistently points out the love the Father has for the Son (John 17:23-25) and the Son for the Father (John 14:31), the Father's love gift to the world of the Holy Spirit (John 14:16-17).
Against this backdrop, God pronounced about the first human, Adam, "The LORD God said, 'It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him'" (Gen. 2:18, NKJV). God made human beings relational beings like Himself. However sin has had a dramatic impact on the world and the relationships between people. So it is not surprising that in a cursed creation, most people battle feelings of loneliness at times. Two things you need to do:
- The best cure for loneliness is an intimate relationship with the LORD Jesus Christ. He wants this and, from your email, it seems clear you are pursuing a relationship of love and trust with Him. Continue to pursue a deeper knowledge of Him through the word of God.
- Because of the love He has shown you, you should seek to share that love with others. Make sure you involve yourself in a healthy church that believes and teaches God's word, demonstrates God's love to its members, and reaches out to the community with God's love and the gospel. Just being around other people who love the LORD as you do will itself help fight the loneliness. Also, serving others in love helps you move from an inward focus to a proper outward focus.
1 If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. (Philippians 2:1-4, NKJV)
Someday you may get married. In searching for your future husband, I again encourage you to become the woman of God our LORD wants you to be, filled with grace and wisdom. If you will trust God to bring the right godly man your way, then get out and serve others in love in the name of Christ. God will direct your path (Proverbs 3:5-6).
May the God bless you with His wisdom and the courage to follow Jesus!
