Question from a friend of WordTruth Press:
>>> Is it right for some pastors to favor some of their members
more than other because they may have more money or influence? >>>WordTruth Press Response:
I think you know the answer to this question already. Of course it is not
right. James 2:1 says, "My brothers, as believers in our glorious LORD Jesus
Christ, don't show favoritism" (NIV). An example follows but the message is
clear - don't show favoritism PERIOD. Someone once said very appropriately:
"The ground is level at the foot of the cross." We are all on the same level
in the congregation - different gifts but equal opportunity.
Pastors are under enormous pressure in a church ministry setting, especially
when their livelihood is at stake. They may knowingly or unknowingly bow to
favoritism toward certain influential or wealthy members.
On the other hand, I have learned that there are always at least two sides
to every situation. You need to schedule a private meeting between you and
this pastor to discuss the issue. You may find out that what you deem to be
favoritism is something else entirely. On the other hand, if it is
favoritism, you need to lovingly confront your pastor so that he can have an
opportunity to change his ways. Just remember, honor his position in the
church even if he has failed in this area (1 Tim. 5:17).
May God bless you with His wisdom and the courage to follow
Jesus!
