Question from a friend of WordTruth Press:

>>>What is the Apostles' Creed?
>>>

WordTruth Press Response:

The Apostles' Creed is universally attributed to the original apostles of Jesus Christ.  It has been altered over the years in minor ways to conform to certain church teachings.

The Apostles' Creed
(circa 180 A.D.)1

I believe in God the Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth:
And in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord:
Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary:
Suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead and buried:
He descended into hell: 2 The third day he rose again from the dead:
He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty:
From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead:
I believe in the Holy Ghost:
I believe in the holy catholic church: the communion of saints:
The forgiveness of sins:
The resurrection of the body:
And the life everlasting. Amen.

2 The usage of the word "Hell" here is to be understood as the grave, the abode of the dead.  Prior to the resurrection of Christ, the location of the souls of those who died is in Hades - a place for the righteous and a separate place for the wicked (Luke 16:22-23,26).  The righteous were not in heaven with the LORD Jesus because He had not yet died for their sins.  After His death on the cross, the penalty for sin was paid (John 19:30; 1 Peter 3:18).  So at that point, all the righteous in Hades could now enter heaven proper.  Christ descended into "Hell" (Hades) to proclaim His victory over sin and lead His children to heaven (Ephesians 4:7-10).  At that point, Hades only houses the dead who are unbelievers.  Any believer today who dies is instantly in the presence of the LORD Jesus (2 Cor. 5:8).  In the end times at the great white throne judgment (Revelation 20:10-15), the people who have rejected the grace of the LORD Jesus will be resurrected from Hades to face their judgment.  They, along with Satan and the angels that followed him, will be cast into Hell for eternity.  Until that time, Hell is empty.

May God bless you with His wisdom and the courage to follow Jesus!
