Question from a friend of WordTruth Press:

>> What  does  the  Bible  say  about charity?

WordTruth Press Response:

The Bible says much about charity. Charity is a word which means "generous toward the needy." In the Bible, it is another word for love. Jesus told us to "Love one another" (John 13:31, NKJV). The kind of love He spoke of is not romantic love, or even brotherly love, but the highest expression of love -- the kind of love God demonstrates toward us. It is the love which does whatever it takes, to meet whatever need is in your life, and expects nothing in return. As you can see, it is another word for charity.  See also Agape Love is What You Need.

Jesus spoke often on charity toward the poor. Throughout the Bible, God shows compassion on those who are poor because these are the ones that society both neglects and oppresses, often at the same time. Deuteronomy 24:14 commands the Israelites not to take advantage of the poor. God's care for the poor is also seen in Psalm 37:14, 40:17, 68:10, 82:3, Matthew 5:3, 11:5. The church also has a responsibility to care for the poor as seen in Romans 15:26.

If God takes note of the poor, then Christians should do likewise.

May the LORD Jesus Christ bless you with His wisdom and
the courage to follow Him!
