Question from a friend of WordTruth Press:

>> Was Noah a drunk before, or after the flood? He walked with God but how was he a drunk?

WordTruth Press Response:

The Bible indicates Noah was a righteous man before the flood as we see in this passage:
8  But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD. 9  This is the genealogy of Noah. Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations. Noah walked with God. (Gen. 6:8-9, NKJV).
While this does not mean Noah was without sin, there is no indication he was a drunk.  However, after the flood, we find this account in Noah's life:

20  And Noah began to be a farmer, and he planted a vineyard. 21  Then he drank of the wine and was drunk, and became uncovered in his tent. (Genesis 9:20-21, NKJV)
So Noah took up farming after the flood and raised grapevines. Apparently, he drank of fermented grape juice and became intoxicated.  The account in the Bible reads as though Noah was ignorant of the wine's effect.  There are no other incidents of Noah becoming drunk recorded in Genesis.  Since Noah was cited in the "Faith Hall of Fame" in Hebrews 11:7, we can safely assume that drunkenness was not a pattern in his life but most likely one isolated incident.

May the LORD Jesus Christ bless you with His wisdom and the courage to follow Him!
