Question from a friend of WordTruth Press:

>> My son and I have a disagreement -- can you help us?  I say Lucifer is Satan and he says he is not ..who is right and can you explain?

WordTruth Press Response:

Perhaps you can both be "right" ... let me explain. The Bible reveals a creature named Lucifer (KJV/NKJV) or the Morning Star (NIV), an angelic being created by God as a guardian cherub before His throne. We see this in Isaiah 14:12-15. Another prophetic passage in Ezekiel 28:12 regarding the King of Tyre speaks of Lucifer also, though it does not directly specify him by name.

Lucifer was created in an initial state of sinlessness, as is true of all God's creatures. At some point, pride entered in and he desired to be enthroned above the LORD God. He was immediately judged and cast from his position in heaven. Unfortunately, he led one third of the angels astray (Rev. 12:3-9). This is the usual course of sin -- it rarely affects just one person. As a fallen angel, that is fallen into sin, he is referred to as Satan:

So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. (Revelation 12:9, NKJV)
So as the sinless angel created by God we call him "Lucifer." But that creature is no longer sinless but rather a murderer and a liar (John 8:44) whom we call "Satan."

May the LORD Jesus Christ bless your continued study of His word that you may know Him better!
